Walking in Petts Wood and The Hawkswood Estate Page 12Sunday February 22nd 2004 Keep removing the blockages Last Thursday I tried to clear a route for the green froth which has been floating on Flusher's pond to drain away. I moved several twigs and branches which had blocked the route taken by the water. The flow immediately became more powerful On Sunday I was keen to see how much green froth had drained away. Some progress had been made but not as much as expected. The route had become blocked again. I cleared it all up again and left. We all have limiting beliefs which block our progress. These need clearing away regularly. Monday 23rd February 2004 The gunge is still there I hastened down to Flusher's pond but the layer of green was still there and looked slightly worse. Again the clearing route for the water had become blocked up with twigs and branches. As soon as I removed them the water came pouring through carrying the gunge with it. Again I cleared away the detritus and steered a large branch away from the key channel Wednesday 25th February 2004 Peacocks and peahens I hastened off to check the green layer on Flusher's pond. This has become an obsession! It had improved but there were new blockages which needed clearing away. On my way through Tong's farm I saw two awesome peacocks and 5 peahens. I hadn't seen or heard them for some months and thought they might have been eaten for Christmas or killed by dogs or foxes. The peacocks looked totally content. Both peacocks stood on mounds of earth surveying the peahens. It is good to see the extraordinary on a regular basis and I look forward to seeing them more often as spring approaches! Thursday 26th February 2004 Icy Pond Today I saw one of the peacocks and two peahens. There were also about 8 parakeets on the tree above Tong's farm. Before that I headed straight for Flusher's pond to check the layer of green. Progress on the getting rid of the froth had been halted by an unexpected obstacle - ice. Flusher's pond had frozen over. A thin film of ice had trapped the froth so that the clear water under the green layer was trickling out of the pond whilst the froth stayed. This is life! When you think all the obstacles have been dealt with along comes another one. Progress is slowed down and you have to deal with the new obstacle before you achieve success. Friday 27th February 2004 Silly hat A little way past the tunnel under the railway line that borders the woods, a large dog rushed at me barking loudly. The owner laughed and said he was just barking at my hat. I immediately thought the dog didn't like my particular hat which does look odd but the owner assured me he barked at anyone with a hat. The owner did apologise, however, for her dog's behaviour. Fair enough. I'm not that keen on my hat either! Sunday 29th February 2004 Be aggressive at times I heard a woodpecker again near Flusher's Pond today. The water was frozen around the edges of the pond but was liquid in the middle. I didn't clear the stream as a lady was passing the pond with her dog and I felt a little embarrassed at being seen apparently playing around with a stick and frozen water! This is a character flaw I need to correct! Most of us are much too worried about what other people think about us or what we are doing. Mike Litman teaches that we need to be assertive and even aggressive at times to live our lives with greatness and power. Tuesday 2nd March 2004 Make your warnings obvious I did some more clearing of the pond today but the green gunge attached itself to my walking stick. I climbed under the fence to wash the stick in the water which was still frozen at the edges of Flushers pond. The bank was slippery and I started slipping towards the pond. I managed to stop in time before I went right in. I wouldn't have drowned as the pond is fairly shallow for an adult. A youngster would have had trouble getting out, however. Possibly a warning notice should be up at the pond since a youngster could drown there. Elsewhere at the crossing over the Kyd brook near Tong's farm there is an electric cable crossing the brook. It is simply laid across the bottom of the brook There are two warning signs but they are only obvious to someone who is actually wading in the brook or who is looking down into it from the bridge above it. In the first instance the warning might be a litle late! Thursday 4th March 2004 The ball of life Soon after I entered the woods today I came across an abandoned football and casually kicked it along in front of me. When there was an upward slope several kicks were needed to motivate the ball forward! When the going was down, only the occasional nudge was needed but the ball had a tendency to rush into problems. Eventually it ran over the bank of the Kyd Brook and into the stream. I left it there for someone else to play with. I won't labour the comparison with life you'll be glad to hear. I noticed the Warden of Petts Wood had repaired a small bridge near the surrounding railway. Great job. It should be a lot safer. Sunday 7th March 2004 Maps are not enough I took the short walk route today as we had visitors for lunch. On the way back I heard a woodpecker in a tree close to the path. As I was staring into the tree to see if I could see him, a couple of tourists came up to me to ask the way to the Willett Memorial. They had an excellent laminated map with them but sometimes a map is not enough. You need the help of a human being to guide you and reassure you that you are on the right path. Monday 8th March 2004 Chip, Chip, Chip Again I heard woodpeckers in the woods today. They teach a great lesson. They keep chipping away at a branch without any apparent result and then suddenly the branch crashes to the ground. Their persistent tiny efforts eventually pay off. If humans had the same patience, miracles would be achieved more often. Two ladies walked past as I was clearing the exit channel from Flushers Pond in order to release the green gunge. They commented that it was a huge task. Tuesday 9th March 2004 The green gunge has moved at last! Flushers pond is not yet fully clear but much of the pond now looks like water rather than a billiard table. A strong wind has been blowing the water in the direction of the tiny exit channel which I have been keeping clear over the last few days. The efforts of one individual (myself in this case) and the forces of Nature (the wind) can achieve amazing things. In the same way an individual who can unite with the forces of the subconcious mind or God can perform miracles. Wednesday 10th March 2004 I met a friend today who had spotted a heron in Pond Wood on the Hawkwood estate. He had approached the pond from the top end of the wood but it spotted him and flew away. A duck and a drake have been swimming on Flushers pond in the last few days. The gunge is still shifting gradually. I did some more work on improving the flow of water and gunge from the pool. Thursday 11th March 2004 Spectacular progress on Flusher's pond today. The daily efforts at clearing the exit from the pond are beginning to pay off. Most of the pond is now free of the gunge. Two large alsatians came sprinting towards me near Soldiers Field. Fortunately one alsatian was chasing the other and they ignored me. But the owner's were not exactly in control of their dogs. One of the bye-laws or rules of the woods is that dog owners should be in control of their pets. Easier said than done! Thursday 18th March 2004 I picked up another dose of flu last Thursday and haven't been for a decent walk since. Yesterday and today I walked as far as the post box and it was good to get some fresh air. Being able to walk in beautiful woods like Petts Wood is a great blessing which I do not appreciate enough. Wednesday 24th March 2004 Excuse or exception? Back in the woods at last for a short walk as I am almost recovered from the flu or bronchitis. It was cold and rain mixed with hail started coming down near the end of the walk. I was wet so I had a good reason to miss my usual weight lifting session. Some people would argue that you should never miss a session because you will weaken your will power if you do. However, I think an exception for illness is a valid exception. There is no need to get ill to prove to yourself that your will power is strong Friday 26th March 2004 Something extra Today I not only did the same walk as Wednesday but this time as I was not soaked I mowed not one but two lawns and did some weightlifting as well. This included moving a large sack of salt into the house. So much for weakened will power! Monday 29th March 2004 Even the birds work I took the long route through the woods today. There was a woodpecker near the repaired bridge near the railway line. I was again surprised at how small it looked. When it pecked it hung from the side of a branch so that the pecking could not be seen or maybe that was the best part of the branch! I am no expert in wood pecker psychology! There was another woodpecker at work in Walk Wood near Flusher's Pond. The pond seemed to be covered in even more green gunge than before I fell ill but there were very small patches of clear water. I again cleared the route for the gunge to flow out of the pond. I met R and I at the oracle of the oak tree. We had a good chat. about the awesome power of yoga experts and martial arts masters. Tuesday March 30th 2004 Keep your colon clear! I met several friends at the oak tree. We discussed the importance of keeping the colon clear of toxins! I am to blame for this topic as I had read an article by a health expert arguing that death starts in the colon. If toxins are left in there for a long time, the poison passes in to the blood stream and causes all kinds of problems. I vaguely remember from my course in the 50's that Charles Atlas believed in clearing the body of poisons as well as in dynamic tension etc. B (the wit) suggested the use of gelignite to clear the colon! No wonder I call this meeting area the oracle of the oak tree! I moved on and passed the parakeet tree. There were no parakeets. Only a couple of magpies. The pond was much clearer than yesterday. Maybe this was the result of my work and a strong breeze blowing in the right direction. By the Willett memorial (we started British Summer TIme on Sunday) I met J. She gave me a little talk about the fact that there are many different kinds of potatoes. This fact had puzzled me for some years. I was interested as I am thinking of growing a few vegetables and potatoes in the back garden. We then went on to discuss free will and genes. J was convinced that no one could be blamed for anything since they were controlled by inherited genes. I disagreed. Half an hour later we were none the wiser! Thursday 1st April 2004 Lamb for supper Today was not as warm as yesterday but it was still fairly hot. Quite a few lambs had just been born in the fields near Tong's farm. The farmer told me there were more on the way. I feel guilty when I see them since we humans love them but eat them! Home
